PTA Announcements

FY11 FCPS budget: At the Jan. 19 PTA meeting, Fairfax County School Board Vice President Tessie Wilson and FCPS budget administrator
Michelle New led a discussion on Superintendent Jack Dale’s proposed FY 2011 budget. The combination of increased enrollment and anticipated economy-driven decreased revenue will again increase class sizes, freeze teacher salaries, reduce supplies, eliminate some athletic and summer school programs (among other cuts).  If the Fairfax Board of Supervisors votes to not increase their transfer to FCPS by the requested $57.8M, cuts will go even deeper:  teacher/IA layoffs and elimination of immersion programs and elementary strings and band, and more (see FCPS budget news and the FCPS Bottom Line).  The education of every child -- even those in special education protected by federal law against direct cuts -- will be impacted as teachers are stretched more and more.  Click here for recommendations for getting involved and making a difference in funding your children's education.

Several grass-roots groups have formed to advocate against cutting particular programs. Two of them are:
- Fairfax FLAGS (Foreign Language Advocacy for Grade Schools), which works to preserve not only foreign language programs, but all elementary programs at risk of cuts. Click here for more information.
- Fairfax Arts Coalition for Education (FACE) works to prevent cuts to music and arts programs in the schools. Click here for more information.

Volunteer Opportunities

GROW Team: The GROW Team has planned an environmentally themed, curriculum-based program this year to involve hands-on outdoor projects for each grade. In order for this program to succeed, we need lots of volunteer help! Ideally, we would like to have a parent volunteer for each homeroom class to be the room leader for these projects. For more information, contact Page Albrecht at pvansickle@cox.net. Grace Art: Come out and volunteer for this special art program and enjoy time in your child’s classroom. It doesn’t take a lot of time, and it is a lot of fun! For more information, visit GRACE Art Ravensworth web site http://sites.google.com/site/graceartravensworthes/ or contact Don Willcox at don.willcox@gmail.com.
