PE/Music Scheduling Issues for Next Year

* Ravensworth Elementary School (Cluster VI) of Fairfax County Public Schools plans to reduce Physical Education for students from 90 minutes to 60 minutes per week for the 2010/11 school year.

* The administration is planning to reduce PE time 30 minutes a week (from 90min to 60 min) so that it can increase Music by 30 minutes per week (from 60min to 90 min)

* The change is in response to concerns for students missing core curriculum to attend instrumental music classes.

* The allocation of an additional 30 min to either PE or Music is at the discretion of the administration.

* Fairfax County requires students get a minimum of 60 min of PE and 60 min of Music per week.  National and VA recommended standard for PE are 150 min of PE per week, and the CDC recommends 60 min a day of physical activity (note not all expected to be provided at school).  National recommendation for music is 60 min per week (there doesn't appear to be a quantifiable VA standard).  State and county application of these recommendations vary widely.
